I started music late in life at 22 years old. I heard Courtney Pine playing ‘Round Midnight, acapella, and felt that I had found my musical calling. Thirty Four years later, my playing has evolved and my musical influences have broadened. Courtney Pine still holds a deep influence on my ear and the playing I most want to emulate. Here are my musical instruments, influences and live performances.
My Musical Influences
Courtney Pine’s acapella version of ‘Round Midnight started my sax journey Soweto Kinch is an old soul with a mature sound and a modern perspective Jonathan Ragonese has helped me focus on learning the theory and putting it into practice. Teodross Avery killed it on his first release. A friend, musical mentor and now killing it again with his latest release! Any horn player has to understand Charlie Parker and desire to know the instrument and the commitment to woodshedding. The way that Sonny Rollins improvises is phenomenal. One of our oldest living legends. If you love Bird, you’ll love Sonny Stitt soulful wizardry. Sometimes overlooked, Cannonball Adderley was incredible at laying out soulful and funky solos. I have had the pleasure of watching Antonio Hart grow and mature from his Berklee days to today…Inspiring!
